Dutch 101 for English Speakers

We're launching Dutch 101 for English Speakers for the 2017-2018 school year, a series of eight monthly classes to introduce adult English speakers to the Dutch language.

These classes will be held during the regular Oranjeschool sessions on Saturday mornings at the French American School of Puget Sound on Mercer Island from 9:45 am to about 12:15 pm, so 2½ hours. These are the dates, along with the (tentative) topics:

  • September 30, 2017: Basics of Dutch pronunciation.
  • October 28, 2017: What is this? - de vs. het words - colors - demonstratives.
  • December 9, 2017: My name is... - question words - personal pronouns - to be - to have.
  • January 20, 2018: How do you do? - present tense of verbs.
  • February 24, 2018: Counting - plurals.
  • March 31, 2018: Time, dates, and the clock.
  • April 21, 2018: My family - possessives.
  • May 19, 2018: Food - adjectives.

These classes are open to anyone—you don't need to have a child at Oranjeschool—and no prior Dutch knowledge is required. Please note that these classes are geared to adult learners only.

The cost is $20 per session, with discounts for multiple sessions. You can purchase a "4-for-3 punch card," where you pay $60 for four sessions instead of $80 if paid individually. That means you can attend all eight classes for $120.
Just bring a check made out to Oranjeschool at the first class you attend. If you pay cash, please bring the exact amount.

These classes will be taught by Ron van de Crommert, native Dutch speaker and experienced language instructor. There's no need to formally register before the classes, but it you're planning to attend, it would be great if you could send an email to dutch101@oranjeschool.org, so we have a sense of how many people to expect. You can also send any questions to that email address.
